Sorti en 1958, le SR2 fut le premier boitier SLR développé par Minolta pour concurrencer Asahi. Curieusement cette version s'appelait SR-2, mais à cause de son prix fut suivi un an après par une version plus abordable ; le SR-1 qui avait seulement une vitesse maximale de 1/500.

Fournit en standard avec un objectif Rokkor f1,8 de 55mm. Cet objectif annonce le démarrage d'une longue lignée d'objectifs à monture bayonette MC compatible et encore utilisable jusque sur le dernier boitier non autofocus de la marque : le X-700
