Créé pour concurrencer les deux principaux fournisseurs d'appareils SLR 35mm et capter une partie du marché professionnel, Minolta a lancé au début des années I970 la série X. Nommé XK aux états unis, X-1 en Austral-Asie et XM en Europe, elle est la base d'un véritable système photographique. Comme ces boitiers ne permettaient pas de motorisation, Minolta décida de lancer une version complètement motorisée. Ce n'était pas un poids plume avec ces 10 batteries type AA de 1,5V. Bien qu'intégrant un certains nombre d'innovations, ces boitiers n'ont pas eu le succès commercial escompté.

Le XKMotor était fournit en standard avec le viseur AE-S pourvu d'une cellule silicium et d'un affichage à LED, l'un des plus performant et lisible de son temps.

Create to compete against the two major camera manufacturers and capture a part of the professional market, Minolta decided to launched in the early 70's the XK (in US), XM (in Europe), X-1 (In Austral-Asia),
base of a professional camera system. As these cameras didn't accept a motor drive, Minolta choose to launch a dedicated version with a fix motor. It was not a light camera with it's 10 AA 1,5V AA batteries!!
Even with the new features and innovation, this camera had not a high commercial success.

This camera was proposed in standard with the AE-S finder including silicon cells for a faster response compare to the AE finder of the XK. It was one of the most efficient and readable LED system at that time
